What Is Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Pain Therapy?

Elbow, wrist, and hand pain can come from a number of different sources — a strained tendon, a compressed nerve, joint wear, or a specific overuse injury — and each responds differently to treatment. Your physiotherapist starts with an assessment to help identify the underlying cause, then builds a plan aimed at reducing pain, restoring movement, and supporting the affected area during daily activities.

Strains and Sprains

A strain affects a tendon or muscle, while a sprain affects a ligament connecting bones. Both are often caused by sudden overstretching — such as outstretching an arm to break a fall or lifting something heavy — and pain may not appear until a day or two after the injury.

Elbow Bursitis

The bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the elbow joint. When it becomes irritated from injury or repeated pressure, it can lead to noticeable swelling and pain around the elbow — a pattern often seen with repeated leaning or direct impact.

Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow

Tennis elbow causes pain on the outer side of the elbow, while golfer’s elbow causes pain on the inner side. Both typically develop from repetitive gripping or wrist movement, whether from sports, tools, or repetitive work tasks — not exclusively from tennis or golf.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs through the wrist, becomes compressed. This can cause tingling or numbness in the thumb and first two fingers, along with wrist and hand discomfort, and is often linked to repetitive hand movements.

Card 5: Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Cubital tunnel syndrome involves compression of the nerve that runs behind the elbow, and is distinct from carpal tunnel syndrome. It typically causes tingling or numbness in the ring and pinky fingers, often worsened by prolonged elbow bending.

Arthritis

Arthritis in the elbow, wrist, or hand develops as joint cartilage wears down over time, often linked to repetitive motion or previous injury. It can cause stiffness, swelling, and reduced grip strength that affects daily tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Pain

Whether you are recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or looking to improve your mobility, our team is here to help. Here are some of the most common questions we hear from our patients.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need for elbow, wrist, or hand pain?

This depends on the underlying cause, how long you’ve had symptoms, and how you respond to treatment. Your physiotherapist will outline an initial plan after your assessment and adjust it as needed.

Is physiotherapy for elbow, wrist, or hand pain covered by insurance in Alberta?

Many extended health plans cover physiotherapy services, though coverage varies by provider and plan. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for details specific to your policy.

Do I need a doctor’s referral for elbow, wrist, or hand pain therapy in Edmonton?

In most cases, a referral isn’t required to book a physiotherapy assessment in Alberta. If your insurance plan requires one for reimbursement, check with your provider before your appointment.

Does carpal tunnel syndrome always need surgery?

Not necessarily. Many people manage carpal tunnel symptoms with physiotherapy, activity modification, and splinting, particularly when addressed early. Whether surgery is needed depends on the severity of nerve compression and your response to conservative treatment — your physiotherapist or physician can help guide that decision.

When should I see a physiotherapist for elbow, wrist, or hand pain?

It’s worth having pain assessed if it lasts more than a few days, limits your grip or movement, or is accompanied by tingling, numbness, or swelling that doesn’t improve with rest.
